Oral History Method Oral history is a field of study and a method of gathering, preserving, and interpreting the voices and memories of people, communities, and participants in past events. Historians have finally recognized that the everyday memories of everyday people have historical importance. Oral history is the oldest type of historical inquiry, stemming from the oral traditions of myriad cultures across the globe, predating even the written word. Before the development of written records, knowledge of the past had to be handed down by word of mouth. The Common Rule, subpart A, was revised in recent years (the “2018 Requirements”). Oral history was the first kind of history. Subparts B, C, and D provide additional protections for certain populations in research. Oral history is the systematic collection of living people’s testimony about their own experiences.
